  Guru Kashi Department of Languages

  Guru Kashi Department of Languages is one of the five departments of Punjabi University Guru Kashi Campus Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo). The campus has been playing significant role in imparting higher education to the rural students of Punjab and surrounding states since 1961. The department enrols students in MA Punjabi, MA English and Certificate Course in Translation. Under the able guidance of Professor Arvind, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University Patiala, the department has been organising national and international seminars on Philosophy, Language, Literature and Translation. Every month, the department organises a competition among the students and celebrates the birthday of literary writers, critics and translators. The priority of the department is to inspire and lead students towards language learning, literature reading and writing. Many students of the department have published their poetry, criticism and translation. The students, research scholars and faculty of the department have translated Anuradha Beniwal’s Azadi Mera Brand and Dostoevsky’s Notes from Underground into Punjabi. Taking insights from Professor Parmjit Singh Ramana Hon. Professor of the Department, the faculty of 19 highly qualified and stable teachers is highly committed to impart quality education to the students of the campus. .

  Dear Students,

  A Warm Welcome

I appreciate your inclination towards Higher Education generally and specifically in the field of Language Studies. As we all are familiar with the fact that our society and particularly our state Punjab is passing through many complicated problems like unemployment, drug abuse, mental illness, brain drain, corruption, lack of empathy etc. However, many noble souls are working tirelessly to cope with these issues from different perspectives but I wish to underline that the solution of all these problems lies in the dissemination and attainment of education. Education not only plays a significant role in becoming economically independent but also very crucial for the development of a thinking persona. As Socrates once said, “I cannot teach anybody anything but I can only make people think”. So, to be an independent thinking human, education is the first touch stone. By being educated (in real sense) we as society will be able to realize Rabindranath Tagore’s dream:.

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high;
Where knowledge is free;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls

Dr BR Ambedkar affirms the same, “Education is what makes a person fearless, teaches him the lesson of unity, makes him aware of his rights and inspires him to struggle for his rights”. such magic is possible solely with the wand of education. Inspired by these words, we are the team of highly educated and committed faculty members in the department. It may be noted that expertise in languages is in great demand in job market like teaching, journalism, translation, dubbing, adapting etc. Therefore, I ensure you that spending two years in the department of languages would be a great learning experience that will completely transform your life.

Keeping in mind Shree Guru Gobind Singh’s blessing of ‘Guru Ki Kashi’ to Damdama Sahib (Talwandi Sabo), I on the behalf of department faculty, assure you quality education and we will try our best to bring your dreams to life.

More Language More Confidence
No Language No Confidence

Wish you very best for future endeavours.
